6 fun things to do in Bristol this summer

Bristol harbour (1)As one of the UK’s most vibrant cities, Bristol is loaded with fun things to do. This is especially true during the summer months when the warm glow of the sunshine provides the perfect excuse to get out and have some fun. So, if you’re a tourist, a long-term resident of the city, or you fall somewhere in the middle of those two categories, we’ve created a list of fun things to do so you can keep thoroughly entertained in Bristol this summer.

1. St Paul’s Carnival

Engross yourself in a variety of live music, sample new culinary delights and dance the day away at one of Bristol’s most well-known and best-loved events. St Paul’s Carnival was first held back in 1968 as a celebration of African Caribbean culture in the city. Put on by the community, for the community, the date for this year’s carnival is Saturday the 6th of July.

2. British Tattoo Art Revealed

Perfect for any tattoo enthusiasts out there, M Shed is playing host to the largest tattoo exhibition in the UK. Running until the 16th of June, it features pieces from leading designers, academics and major private collectors, providing a comprehensive overview of British tattooing and the perfect opportunity to learn about tattooing’s heritage as an art form.

3. Special cricket exhibition at Brunel’s SS Great Britain

In order to commemorate this year’s Cricket World Cup, a special exhibition is being held at the SS Great Britain until the 21st July. The exhibition is about the ship’s role in international cricket and how it was used to transport the All England Cricket Team to Australia in 1861 and 1863.

The exhibit includes photographs, objects and even a diary from one of the cricketers on the ship describing his two-month voyage. Therefore, it will no doubt provide a fascinating insight into the histories of navigation and cricket.

4. Bristol Cider Salon

Cider is something that most of us in the West Country have sampled to bigger or lesser degrees and is something of a speciality in this part of the world. So, if you fancy tasting up to 90 different ciders from countries like Sweden, Italy, Estonia, Portugal, Spain and the USA, get yourself down to the Cider Salon from the 3rd to the 9th of June.

5. Bristol Food Connections

If food is more your thing, however, why not pay a visit to the Bristol Food Connections festival instead? Taking place from the 12th – 23rd of June, there is a huge range of food-tasting events going on during this time. Enjoy everything from Somalian and Moroccan food, to Caribbean and old British favourites like pies!

6. DogFest

From the 22-23rd June, Ashton Court will host DogFest, the ultimate summer festival for dogs. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t have plenty of fun whilst here too!

There are various activities that you and your beloved canine can enjoy together; Hay Bale Racing, a mass dog walk and games where you can test your dog’s resolve to name a few. In addition to this, there’s plenty of music, food & drink here to enjoy. Plus, this year’s special guests are Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick and TV Broadcaster Clare Balding.
