How many people live in Bristol? And 7 other Bristol stats.

Bristol cityAccording to Bristol City Council, the population of Bristol is estimated to be 459,300. However, this figure is expected to rise to over half a million by mid-2027. But that’s only one of a thousand interesting statistics related to the city. Fancy learning a few more of them? Well, we’ve listed a few below, which demonstrate why it’s such a fascinating place to live.

2. 25% of the world’s nature documentaries were produced in Bristol

3. 13% of the total population is made up of people aged 65 and over

When you consider the population of England and Wales as a whole consists of 18.2% people aged 65 and over, the idea that Bristol is a vibrant city, centred around youth, doesn’t seem particularly far-fetched. This is strikingly apparent when you consider that 30% of the population consists of 20-34 year olds, compared to 20% nationally.

Taking place on the 1st of April 1979, members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club took part in the first modern bungee jump. Despite getting arrested shortly after, jumps continued in other major locations, helping to popularise the concept around the world.

5. Over 100,000 people attend the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta each year

Bristol’s history with hot air balloons is well-documented; the first modern hot air balloon flight in Britain took place here back in 1967, and since launching back in 1979 the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is now the biggest annual balloon festival in Europe.

6. The city has 4 Michelin-starred restaurants

Any foodies out there may already be aware of this fact. But for those who aren’t, the four Michelin-starred restaurants in the city are:

  • Wilks

7. The first solid chocolate bar was produced here
