Taking place on the 1st of April 1979, members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club took part in the first modern bungee jump. Despite getting arrested shortly after, jumps continued in other major locations, helping to popularise the concept around the world.
5. Over 100,000 people attend the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta each year
Bristol’s history with hot air balloons is well-documented; the first modern hot air balloon flight in Britain took place here back in 1967, and since launching back in 1979 the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is now the biggest annual balloon festival in Europe.
