Why Energy Efficiency is important

Energy efficiency is one of those topics that is seemingly on the lips of an ever-growing list of people. However, when its importance is discussed, it’s usually in respect to the environment and its wider impact. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, however as a home-improvement company, we at Associated Windows wondered what benefits it can provide for the average homeowner. So after a bit of research, we made some interesting findings:

Significant opportunities to save money

Homes which are more energy efficient offer increased potential to save money on energy bills. According to the Energy Saving Trust, installing double glazing on a semi-detached house which is completely single-glazed can save between £65 and £70 per year with B-rated glass and £70-75 with A-rated glass.

However, there are alternative methods for increasing your energy efficiency. For instance, just turning off appliances that are left on standby can save up to £30 a year. Replacing traditional light bulbs in your home with LED versions can also save you about £35 over the same period.

More comfortable home environment

A home that performs well in terms of energy efficiency tends to be more comfortable in the following ways:

Better ventilated

Poorly ventilated homes are susceptible to a build-up of moisture, which provides ideal conditions for house dust mites and fungi to thrive. Dust mites are regularly cited as a cause of asthma in children, whilst breathing in fungi can cause a host serious health issues. However, energy efficient homes tend to be better ventilated, meaning the risk of you inhaling such harmful substances is reduced.

Warmer temperatures

Properties that have been fitted with energy efficient doors and windows tend to retain heat better than homes which haven’t been. This means they tend to be warmer in the winter.

Great if you’re looking to sell or rent out your home

Energy efficient homes tend to have longer life cycles, lower maintenance fees, and cost less to run. This can be a great selling point for anyone who’s looking to sell their home, especially as home sellers must now provide an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which contains details of their home’s energy efficiency, to would-be buyers. Plus, homes which are more energy efficient tend to demand a higher selling price.

Lower emissions

A significant amount of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions comes from homes. But, the less energy you use, the less greenhouse gases you emit, meaning subsequent harm to the environment is reduced. For homeowners who are conscious of damaging the environment, this is an important benefit of an energy efficient home.
